Success By 6 is a collaborative on early childhood development led by the United Way of Kankakee & Iroquois Counties, as well as the Community Foundation of the Kankakee River Valley. We work to ensure that all children birth to age six have the positive and enriching experiences and the parent-child relationships necessary to begin school ready to succeed.
Success By 6 provides free resources for young children and their families:
Early Childhood & Preschool Fair
Early Development Calendards
Kindergarten Bootcamp - Helps children get ready for kindergarten
Text4Baby - Text "Baby" or "Bebe" (for Spanish) to 511411 for information about your baby's development from prenatal to 1 year old.
For the past year, Success By 6 has been participating in a project called the Early Development Instrument (EDI) with the Erikson Institute of Chicago. The goal of the EDI is to survey each kindergarten student across our community in order to find the gaps in their development based on the neighborhoods where they live. The EDI has provided us with population level data that shows us how our children are faring from an early age so that we can address any barriers they face in reaching success.
The EDI surveys kindergarten students in the areas of physical health & well-being, emotional maturity, social competence, language & cognitive skills, and communication skills. The data we received about Kankakee County has been eye-opening. It will help us make more strategic decisions about what types of programs to fund in order to bridge the gaps and help all of our young children succeed in school.
